Peace Out, Elementary School!

We officially have a middle schooler!  What a strange (and somewhat disappointing) way to wrap up his elementary school years.  Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, he missed out on some 5th grade activities that all 5th graders look forward to - 5th grade camp, field trips to Lansing (because they get to take a nice bus with a bathroom!) and DIA, farewell party and basically just time spent with friends in his final year of elementary school.  In addition, he had a 5th grade teacher that he absolutely adored so he missed out on time in her classroom as well.  He said that if given the chance, he would repeat 5th grade next year if he could go to camp but he would have to have Mrs. Charbonneau as his teacher again!  However, the reality is that he'll be off to middle school next year! He's both excited and nervous about the transition.  I know neither of us are thrilled about the early 6:50am bus pick up time - but we will need to see what school even looks like come fall.

Since they couldn't have a traditional 5th grade graduation ceremony, the school organized a 5th grade drive by parade to honor all the graduates.  Matthew was most excited about the opportunity to stick his body out of the sunroof!  It was very nice that all the teachers and staff were at the school to celebrate our 5th graders and we really appreciated how they tried to make this memorable for them, despite the circumstances.  Here's a video and some pictures showing his last hurrah as a Hampton Hornet!

BTW - when asked what he likes most about this pandemic and being home all the time: I like that I am playing more video games (Fortnite).
